Guard Dog

One thing that I have noticed the past few weeks as I have been observing and noting the actions of Shorty was that at night while everyone is asleep, he would walk around the house. To me it's kind of weird because usually he would be sleeping on the couch instead of walking around. When he walked around the house, it was as if he was scanning the house. What I mean by that is that, it's like he is making sure that everything is okay and that we're all safe. He would make his rounds by going to the living room, then to the garage, followed by my room, then back to bed. Sometimes he even sleeps with me, which is when I started noticing this weird actions.

When he continued to do that I realized that he isn't so much of a lazy dog. I realized that he was more than a dog that doesn't bark or a lazy dog, but that he was also a guard dog. He may be small and quiet, but he is like an alarm when he senses danger, he protects and alerts us. When I got to this conclusion, I was eager to know more about him and about his breed, so I went on Google. I came across a website called www.dogtime.com, it said that a lhasa apso is a naturally protective dog and that it usually thinks of itself as a large dog, when really it isn't. It also said that when it comes to protecting it's own, it's very fierce. Lhasa's are naturally suspicious of strangers, which's is an excellent trait for a palace guard and they take their job as protector seriously.

After reading that, it started to make even more sense. Now I'm going to start paying more attention to things that are unusual and maybe next time I might learn something else that will surprise me

  2. I love guard dogs. Feeling protected is a warm and secure feeling. Knowing that you can depend on your dog to protect you is beautiful. Why do dogs feel protective over humans? At what point do they gain trust?
